Workshops Offers

Here is some more information about our workshop offers. These have been developed for three groups, Schools (Secondary and A Level), Universities, non-professionals and professionals.

Introduction to Puppetry Workshop [2 – 3 hours]

Suitable for Schools, Universities and Non-Professionals

This workshop is a basic, fun-filled, jam packed introduction to the principles of puppetry, including non-verbal communication, concentration and spacial awareness in addition to puppetry and animation.

Puppetry, non-verbal storytelling and devising [2 – 3 hours]

Suitable for Schools, Universities, Non-Professionals and Professionals

This workshop focuses using puppets and objects to devise work that does not rely on text. Participants will be introduced to the basic principles of puppetry; both with puppets and objects, exploring communication and collaboration. There will be a focus on how these visual elements can be interpreted creatively and how this, in turn, communicates to audiences through performance. Participants will then work together to develop a creative idea, interpreting from a stimuli (an image, piece of music or text) and will work together to create a small performance, to be shown at the end of the workshop.

Devising with Sensitive Subject Matter [2 – 3 hours or full day]

Suitable for Schools, Universities and Professionals

This workshop is an introduction to working with sensitive subject matter in theatre, looking specifically at why theatre is a useful vehicle to explore it. We will explore our basic devising method, using sensitive subjects as the stimulus for the session. Participants will be encouraged to work physically and visually at all times, with little reliance on using text.

Making, Creating & Using Shadow Puppets [2 – 3 hours]

Suitable for Schools, Universities and Non-Professionals

This workshop is an introduction to making your own shadow puppets. Participants will make their own shadow puppet to take away, learn how to operate them and also have a chance to play with some of Smoking Apples’ own intricately designed and made shadow puppets. Participants will be encouraged to create their own designs, however, templates are available to use and/or adapt.
