Flux Workshop: Puppetry and the Female Body

As part of our next wave of development on Flux, we ran an explorative workshop on Puppetry and the Female Body at Shoreditch Town Hall. As you know, our previous shows have almost always had lead male characters and Flux is all about Kate, a female nuclear research scientist. We’ve been surprised (and perhaps ignorant in the beginning) at how different the puppetry technique is when you’re operating a female puppet and we wanted to explore this further.

Combining a practical, explorative workshop, with discussion on the role of women in science, we worked with a group to play around with some puppetry ideas. Our explorations and discoveries tended to fall into four areas; anatomical/skeletal, action/gesture, personality/emotion and social conditioning. It was interesting to see also how much of a cross over there was between the sections and how we could work with these on Kate to develop her character.

Flux will be going back into development in April so watch this space for more updates and where you can see some of our sharings.
